THE SHIRT THAT STARTED WITH A JOB INTERVIEW

I. INTRODUCTION

StephenCharles began during a job interview. I was the one conducting it.

It was the middle of summer in Dubai. The candidate sitting opposite me was prepared, articulate and clearly capable. He had also arrived with visible perspiration on his shirt, something familiar to anyone who has walked from a car park to an office in Dubai heat. It had no bearing on his ability to do the job. But the moment stayed with me. We put care into how we present ourselves, particularly when something matters, yet our clothing can leave us feeling uncomfortable before the conversation has even begun.

I started wondering why the shirts we wore to work seemed so poorly suited to the place we lived.

II. AN IDEA I COULD NOT LEAVE ALONE

I wanted a shirt that looked refined and felt comfortable through an ordinary working day in Dubai. Something I could wear to a meeting, a client lunch or dinner afterwards without feeling that I had to choose between looking dressed and feeling at ease. I assumed I would find what I was looking for. When I couldn’t find something that brought those qualities together in the way I imagined, I began exploring what it would take to make it.

My background was in recruitment, not fashion. I had no established relationships with fabric mills or manufacturers and very little understanding of how much work sits behind a well made shirt.

What I did have was a clear sense of why I wanted one.

III. LEARNING FROM THE BEGINNING

I started reaching out to pattern makers, fabric mills, manufacturers; China, Portugal, Turkey and further out from there. Most conversations ended one of two ways: a polite no, or a quote that made no sense for a first run from someone with no fashion background and no industry relationships. A few people took the meeting just to see who was asking.

I went ahead anyway with a manufacturer in China who said yes. What came back wasn’t close. It was an expensive way to learn that intention and execution are two different skill sets.

The turning point came when I was introduced to a production house in Dubai.

Being able to sit together, handle fabrics and review samples in person changed the process. We could look at the same detail and discuss what needed to improve. Gradually, the shirt I had imagined began to take shape.

IV. TWO YEARS OF SMALL DECISIONS

What followed was two years of development.

There were fabric samples, fittings and repeated adjustments. I began noticing things I would once have overlooked: how a fabric falls, how a collar sits, how a shirt feels when you sit down, reach forward or wear it for several hours. Some decisions were visible. Others were hidden inside the garment. Each one asked the same question: does this make the shirt better to wear?

The Legacy Shirt took shape through that process. A soft bamboo blend, a refined silhouette and discreet moisture wicking panels beneath the arms and across the back yoke brought together the qualities I had been searching for.

There were setbacks and compromises to work through. There were also moments when a small correction made an unmistakable difference. Those were the moments that kept me going.

V. THE FIRST PIECES OF STEPHENCHARLES

The Legacy Shirt became the starting point for the collection and a reference for how I want to approach every piece that follows. Alongside it is The Foundation Trouser, designed with the same attention to how clothing feels and functions throughout the day. Its soft Tencel blend, clean drape and integrated shirt grip make it a natural companion to the shirt.

Together, they form the beginning of a wardrobe I hope to build thoughtfully over time.

Both are made in the UAE, the place that inspired the idea and helped bring it to life.

VI. THE LEGACY

For a long time, StephenCharles existed in fabric swatches, sample garments and conversations fitted around my working day. Seeing those ideas become pieces that someone else can choose, wear and make their own is a very personal milestone.

There is much more I hope to create. For now, I am proud to share where it began.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story. I hope you find something here that earns a place in yours.
